Secret Code Generator · Step-by-step guide
Create and print secret-code message worksheets
Turn a built-in or custom message into a printable number-code puzzle with adjustable hints and a matching answer key.
Open the app →Use Secret Code Generator to turn short messages into printable puzzles. Each letter is replaced by a number from 1 to 26; the same letter always has the same number within one puzzle. Students use a code key to uncover the message.
1. Set the title and message language
In Puzzle settings, type a Worksheet title (up to 70 characters). Under Message language, select English or Bahasa Indonesia. This chooses the language of the built-in messages, not the website's interface language. You can switch the interface independently using the Language control at the top.
For Message source, choose Built-in message to pick from 12 ready-made messages in the selected language. Choose Write your own to enter a custom message. Changing a setting is not the same as translating a message; check the text before generating.
2. Write a message the generator can use
For custom text, use words made with A–Z, spaces and common punctuation (periods, commas, exclamation marks, question marks, apostrophes, quotation marks, colons, semicolons and hyphens). Accented Latin letters are converted to their basic letters and lowercase letters become uppercase. Numbers and other scripts are not supported.
Keep your message to 240 characters and 160 letters maximum, with no word longer than 18 characters. If the generator displays an error, shorten or simplify the message, then try again.
3. Choose the number code and hints
Under Number code, choose one of these modes:
- Alphabet · A=1, B=2… uses the standard alphabetical order through Z=26.
- Shuffled · a new secret alphabet assigns the numbers to letters in a seed-based shuffled order.
Under Hint letters in the code key, choose Full key · beginner, 6 letters, 3 letters, or No letters · challenge. With fewer hints, students must infer more of the mapping. A partially revealed key does not necessarily produce a uniquely solvable puzzle; the solution page shows your intended message.
4. Generate a repeatable code
The Seed · repeat a code field lets you reproduce the shuffled mapping and selected hint letters when the message, settings, seed and app version stay the same. A seed is not a saved puzzle or an account password.
Select Generate puzzle after changing the message, code or hint settings. Select New random seed to generate a fresh seed automatically. For an alphabet-order code with a full hint key, a different seed may make no visible difference.
5. Preview, print or save the answer key
Choose Paper (A4 or US Letter) and Orientation (Portrait or Landscape). Keep Include answer key checked if you want a matching solution sheet. Changing paper, orientation or the answer-key checkbox updates the existing preview without changing the encoded message.
Review Your secret message, then click Print / Save PDF. Match the paper size and orientation in the browser print dialog, check the preview, and turn off browser-added headers and footers if necessary. Choose Save as PDF if you want a digital copy. The optional answer page displays the full letter key and decoded message.
Helpful tips
- For beginners, try a short built-in message with Alphabet and Full key. Increase the challenge with a shuffled code and fewer hints.
- Every worksheet is black and white, suitable for ordinary printing. The printed footer also links to the MaenHuruf Android learning app.
- This is a browser-based generator, not an offline-installed app. Your custom messages stay in browser memory and are not included in optional visit analytics. Print or save the puzzle if you want to keep it; the seed alone does not store your message.
