Next Pattern Generator · Step-by-step guide
Create and print repeating-pattern worksheets
Build shape or arrow patterns, choose missing-symbol questions, and print worksheets with optional choices and answer keys.
Open the app →Use Next Pattern Generator to make black-and-white pattern worksheets for children. Each question has one missing shape or arrow. Learners can choose an answer or draw the missing symbol, then check the matching answer key.
1. Set the worksheet title and number of questions
In Pattern settings, enter a Worksheet title and choose Questions from 1 to 20. Set Symbols to Shapes (such as circles, triangles or stars) or Arrows (up, right, down or left).
2. Choose how the pattern repeats
Set Difficulty to Easy, Medium, or Hard. The supported repeating groups depend on your choice:
- Easy:
ABorAAB. - Medium:
ABB,ABC, orAABB. - Hard:
ABBC,ABCD, orABCBA.
In Repeating group, leave Mix repeating groups selected for variation, or choose one group for that difficulty. The letters describe positions in a repeated unit: the printed worksheet uses shapes or arrows, not letters.
Under Question type, select What comes next?, Missing item in the middle, or Mix both types. Questions have one intended missing symbol within the generator's supported repeating-pattern families; this does not cover every conceivable mathematical pattern rule.
3. Choose whether to show answers as choices
Keep Show three answer choices checked if learners should circle A, B, or C. Clear it if they should draw the missing symbol directly in the gap.
Keep Include answer key checked to add matching solution pages. The key shows the filled gap, identifies the correct choice when choices are enabled, and displays the repeating group.
4. Reuse a seed or generate new questions
The Seed · repeat a worksheet field is an editable code. Reusing the same seed with the same question count, symbols, difficulty, repeating group, question type, and app version reproduces the same generated questions. Letter case and spaces can affect the result. A seed is not a saved file or password.
Choose Generate worksheet to apply changes to the title, seed or question settings. Select New random seed to make a different set automatically. If the app cannot create enough *distinct* questions for restrictive settings, try Mix repeating groups or fewer questions.
5. Set paper size, print, or save PDF
Choose Paper as A4 or US Letter, then set Orientation to Portrait or Landscape. Changing paper, orientation, answer choices or answer-key options updates the current preview without generating different questions.
Review Your worksheet, then select Print / Save PDF. In your browser's print dialog, match the chosen paper size and orientation; inspect the preview and turn off browser-added headers and footers if needed. Choose Save as PDF to keep the worksheet digitally. When enabled, answer-key pages are included after the question pages.
Helpful reminders
- If the page feels too crowded, reduce the number of questions or choose landscape orientation.
- Choose Easy and a small question count for a first activity; increase complexity as learners gain confidence.
- This is a regular browser website, not an offline-installed app. Settings and worksheet content are processed in your browser; optional visit analytics do not include titles, seeds, patterns, settings or answers. Save or print the output to keep it.
