Create and print a crossword

Use Crossword to make a printable puzzle where learners read Across and Down clues and write answers into numbered squares. You can use built-in words or supply your own clues.

1. Choose the words

Set Word-bank language to English or Bahasa Indonesia. This changes the puzzle words and clues, not the interface language selector in the header.

Under Word source, choose one of these options:

• Built-in · choose for me: set Number of words from 2 to 20 and let the app select a compatible set.
• Built-in · pick words: use Search words or clues and check the words you want, up to 20. Select Edit selected words as custom if you want to change their clues.
• My words and clues: enter each answer and clue on a separate line, such as CAT:A small pet that purrs.. Use Import TXT or JSON to load an existing list.

For custom entries, use 2–20 answers containing 2–20 letters (A–Z) each. Every answer needs a clue of 3–180 characters. Open Review words and correct duplicates or invalid entries before generating. Imported TXT or JSON files have a 128 KB limit.

2. Set the grid and print options

Use Grid space to choose Automatic · up to 25 × 25, 15 × 15, 21 × 21, or 25 × 25. You can also enter a Worksheet title.

Choose Paper (A4 or Letter), Orientation (Portrait or Landscape), and Include answer key if you want solution pages. These print settings do not generate a different puzzle.

3. Generate and review the crossword

Select Generate crossword. The app searches for a single connected crossword and previews the numbered grid and Across/Down clues. For a selected or custom list, every chosen answer must appear in the completed puzzle; the app does not silently drop words.

If the words cannot form a connected group, add a word that shares letters with different groups or change the list. If the search cannot finish a full layout, try again, choose a larger grid, or edit the words. This does not necessarily mean the puzzle is impossible.

You can select Cancel during generation. The previous completed puzzle remains available if generation fails or is cancelled. After changing words, clues, or the title, select Generate crossword again to update the preview.

4. Print or save as PDF

Select Print / Save PDF and check your browser's print preview. Match the paper size and orientation, use 100% scale, and turn off browser headers and footers.

The learner sheets contain the numbered grid and clues. If Include answer key is checked, the app adds matching solution sheets. Long clue lists may continue onto additional pages. Choose a PDF destination in your browser to save a file instead of printing.

5. Save on this device (optional)

Save on this device is off by default. Turn it on to store the current draft and generated puzzle in this browser. Clear saved data removes the stored copy without closing the puzzle you currently have open. Unsaved work may disappear after a reload, and browser storage can be unavailable or cleared.

The app processes your words and clues locally; no account or content upload is required.
